The SexXor Pyrate Coat of Do0m - November 2005

Every year, the Carolina Renaissance Festival declares one weekend in November to be "Pirate Christmas" weekend. I'm not sure where they get the "Christmas" bit, but their guest artists are all pirate themed (including our favorites, the Pyrates Royale!) and there is a distinct piratical flair throughout the fair.

In 2005, I decided that I needed a pirate coat. Most of the pirate coats I had seen to date had been boxy 17th c. coats cut for men. Since I don't do faire for historical accuracy, I wanted something that read pirate - but had a distinct feminine cut to it. I came up with... The SexXor Pyrate Coat of Do0m!11!1!!!1!

This coat is crafted out of medium-weight forest green linen with black cotton velveteen trimmings. The bodice of the coat is princess seamed to fit snugly through the torso, with a deep "v" neckline accented by black velveteen lapels. It ends in a V at the waist and clasps with two pewter toned cloak clasps. The buttons are faux pearl and silver, and are also used on the cuffs. The bodice of the coat is fully lined in linen.

The skirting of the coat is two quarter-circle panels of the green linen, fully lined in the black velveteen. The skirt is split down the back to show off the underskirt or trousers. It has a *wonderful* swoop to it when you twirl!

When I wore this coat in November, 2007, it was chilly out - so I added the faux fur collar. It's simply pinned into place, but is such a nice touch that I think I'll continue to wear it with the coat when it's chilly.
