A tailor's clapper is - essentially - a block of wood you use to press seams flat. It's generally used for bulky or other hard-to-press seams - I've mostly used it on wool. You press the seam open (with lots of steam), and while the seam is still hot, you press the clapper on top of it. This flattens the seam nicely. Most instructions say to just press the clapper into the seam - but I tend to pound the seams with the clapper. I find that I get a crisper seam, AND it feels really good. ;)

What FUN!! Can't wait to see it finished! But.... what is a tailor's clapper? Can you take a pic for me? I never heard of it and suddenly you're "whacking the heck" out of your seams; you can just imagine how amusing that must sound to someone who has no earthly idea what it is. Think vaudeville! I LOVE that red! I also love the dummy with the legs! *drool* WANT!!

That is a lovely fabric, the dress is gorgeous too. You really look like you could be a subject for a painting with that spinning wheel in front of you.

Aw, thank you! :) I do love a nicely fitted kirtle - there is something about the nice, clean lines that just looks fantastic on any shape or size. :) The hood pattern is from here:http://cadieux.mediumaevum.com/redhood.htmlMarie gives pretty good details on how to construct it. It's easy-peasy lemon-squeezy! Mine is in wool flannel and fully lined in linen, and I've since decided that the lining in the liripipe makes it too heavy, so I'm going to pull 3/4 of the liripipe lining out. I think I made mine a wee bit too small, so it doesn't stay on my head on it's own - but if I tie down a coif or headcloth and pin the hood to that, it stays pretty solid all day long. :)

That is a very lovely redo! I agree- the Cranach dress did not do you or that fabric justice, but I'm partial to kirtles anyway. :) I also like your hood- I've been trying to make an open hood for myself, but I just can't seem to get it right. How did you get the measurements to make it fit right?Edyth MillerThe Compleatly Dressed Anachronist:edythmiller.blogspot.com

You know, the last time I was in Pleasantville, IA my grandfather's old farmland was for sale. Sigh. So many childhood memories even without the house and barn there anymore. It's all corn right now. But it used to also have horses, goats, sheep, two barns, a house, and a couple of silos besides the two fields of corn and the hay field. My cousin, who lives only a few miles from there has her own "hobby farm." She raises chickens and sells eggs to neighbors and family. They have a couple of animals they raise each year for slaughter. I think a couple sheep and maybe a cow.I've always thought it would be nice to have an organic garden if I could share it with a neighbor (both the work and produce) and I've always imagined that neighbor being Joanna. I don't think I could be industrious with Joanna to inspire me.Anyway, I'm simpatico with the price of groceries. We stopped tonight to pick up stuff to make our own pizza and I swear it doesn't cost much less than ordering one to be delivered. And I bought all "on sale" ingredients.

Well, your discussions about communal living off the land have always echoed strongly my own sentiments—Joanna and I have talked often of our desire to have some chickens, a cow or two, a goat, and other minor livestock to keep ourselves in milk and eggs. If we get the kids involved and make it part of their education, we should have time together to cultivate a garden as well...Of course, if we all band together, we'll be that much stronger when the Apocalypse comes! The more bodies we have to fight the irradiated zombies, the better!

*nod* We live in a chicken-friendly city, so once we're able to get the backyard fenced in, we're going to start raising a small flock of chickens. Theoretically just for the eggs, but in tough times, they might end up in the pot, too. I'd love to start doing more gardening - but I just *don't* have the time. I need to make a more concerted effort to get to the farmer's market once a week, though. I read an article at one point about a family that ate nothing but locally grown goods for a year - it was really an experience. I'd like to try that, someday. We'll see.

Preach it, sister. We've gone mostly organic, and it's killer (we pay about $3.50-$4 for our dozen eggs). There was an old Harper's article titled "The Oil We Eat"; that's all coming home now. Every bit of the economy rests on every other bit, and it's not looking to be very soundly stacked these days...

Oh my gosh.. I came across you totally by accident looking for images of real (not portrait) working class Italian dresses. You made my wedding dress and my husband's wedding doublet!!I don't hand sew except my ball joint doll clothing.Good luck with the chemise! Right now I'm blackworking cuffs and hand beading Tudor folded back sleeves. Good times.Jane in Pittsburgh(Got married in October of 2005)
